How do you keep your team motivated when the mission is so difficult?

We all believe in the cause. A lot of us are here because we care, not because we're chasing a paycheck. I tell people, if you're a programmer, don't just polish knobs on Gmail build tools that help people stay free. That belief keeps us going.
